Celebrate Unity and Service: MLK Day March, Festival and Food Drive 2026

January 1, 2026

What Is the MLK Day March, Festival & Food Drive?

Every year, Austin honors the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through a community celebration that blends remembrance, service, culture, and togetherness. The Austin MLK Day March, Festival and Food Drive brings together local families, individuals, and organizations to march, celebrate, and give back.

Event Details for 2026

  • Date and Format: The march begins at the state Capitol (or nearby campus of University of Texas at Austin) in the morning and proceeds to Huston-Tillotson University, where the community festival and food-drive celebration takes place.
  • Festival and Gathering: Once the march reaches Huston-Tillotson, the festival starts, so expect vendors, local music, community energy, and a welcoming atmosphere for all.
  • Give Back: The event doubles as a food drive for the Central Texas Food Bank (or local partner), with donation boxes available along the route and at the festival. Suggested items include non-perishable foods like canned goods, pasta, beans, peanut butter, whole-grain cereals, and more.

Cost: Free! The march and festival are open to all, and participation or attendance does not require a fee.

Tips for Attending

  • Bring a bag of non-perishable food items (canned goods, dry pasta/beans, peanut butter, etc.) to donate. Donation boxes will be available at the march starting point, along the route, and at the festival.
  • Check the event’s official site (the “MLK Celebration” site) before heading out. Inclement weather or other factors sometimes prompt postponements.
  • Plan arrival early if you want a good spot — The march typically starts in the morning; festival gatherings kick off mid-day, and arriving early can make the experience smoother.
  • Dress for the weather, bring friends or loved ones. It’s a community-oriented celebration that’s more fun and meaningful when shared.

From all of us at The Anderson, we encourage you to join this meaningful Austin tradition. It’s a chance to reflect, celebrate community, give back, and start 2026 with purpose and connection.
